Pablo Antonio Furelos Toral (La coruña, 1960) is a Spanish maxilofacial surgeon. His work has been mainly focused on facial reconstructive surgery1 and craniofacial surgery2.

Biography

He graduated in medicine in 1983 at Santiago de Compostela University. He specialized in Oral and Maxilofacial surgery as intern doctor in Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid, getting his degree in 1989. He completed his training in several foreign hospitals. Likewise he carried out an intensive work in the unit of Experimental Surgery in Hospital 12 de Octubre.

Being an intern doctor he was Secretary of the Nationall Comission for Maxilofaical Surgery.

His first stage as an specialist took him to Hospital 12 de Octubre, taking part in the creation of the Unidad de Cirugia Craneofacial3 (Craniofacial Surgery Unit).

In 1992 he assumed the position of Manager in the Maxilofacial Surgery Program in Hospital Universitario de Tenerife, a position he held for 14 years. Various interventions4 that took place during this period had a wide media stir.

Co-author and author of various scientific books5 and numerous publications.

During this period we collaborated as a professor at Medicine Faculty in University of La Laguna, teaching Maxillofacial Surgery. Likewise he wrote different essays in the Unit of Experimental Surgery in that faculty.

In 2005 he moved to Paris, although he went on developing clinic works in Tenerife.

In 2006 he asked for an extended leave of absence in Hospital Universitario de Canarias to investigate. He has focused in two main fields. The first one is Maxillofacial Surgery Minimally Invasive (especially focused in dental implants). The second one is facial remodelling in serious facial deformities, combining surgical and non-surgical techniques.

He moved his private consultation to Palacio Martí Dehesa6. This building was built in 1912 and it belonged to the Government of the Canary Islands for 25 years. A respectful restoration was done, supervised by Prof. Alberto Darias, professor of Art History and the architects Corona and P. Amaral7. The result is a clinic that combines classicism with Avant-guard technology.

In 2009 he established a local office for his clinic in the historical centre of Paris, in order to have a more direct communication with his patients from north Europe.

Solidarity with the disadvantaged is a especially important part of his life; since 1990 he disinterestedly helps in some countries in Africa (Senegal9, Mauritania). Quoting his own words: “…that might be my greatest pride”.
